Emergency Medical Technician

The Keller Center for Advanced Learning Emergency Medical Technician Program (EMT) program is designed to take high school students and inspire them to a future career as a Pre-hospital care professional, either on an ambulance, a fire engine, or in an Emergency Room. This dynamic entry level course is set up for senior level students who are currently enrolled in a Keller ISD high school.

Topics during the program include; medical legal considerations, basic anatomy and physiology, patient assessment, airway adjuncts and oxygen administration, cardio pulmonary resuscitation, managing traumatic injuries as well as medical emergencies, hazardous materials and ambulance operations.

The minimum psychomotor skills required of the EMT include;

Airway and Breathing

• Insertion of airway adjuncts intended to go into the oropharynx or nasopharynx
• Use of positive pressure ventilation devices such as manually triggered ventilators and automatic transport ventilators ​
   

Pharmacological Interventions

• Assist patients in taking their own prescribed medications
• Administration of the following over-the-counter medications with appropriate medical oversight:
• Oral glucose for suspected hypoglycemia
• Aspirin for chest pain of suspected ischemic origin
   

Trauma Care

The EMT student in this program will also receive training in Professionalism, and Advanced Cardiac Life Support for the EMT, a program that is designed to help the EMT better understand and function as part of the team during the resuscitation of person in cardiac arrest.  

Upon successful completion of this program students will be eligible to sit for the National Registry Certification Exam for EMT- ​Basic. ** It should be noted that students must be 18 years of age before taking the exam.**
